What is ammonia? Ammonia (NH3) is a nitrogen-containing compound produced by fish through their gills and also from the decomposition of organic matter in the aquarium. It exists in two forms: toxic un-ionized ammonia (NH3) and less toxic ammonium (NH4). Most test kits measure both forms, so a high reading doesn’t always indicate the true level of toxic ammonia. Why is ammonia harmful? Ammonia is highly toxic to fish, even at low concentrations (1 ppm or less). It can cause gill damage, making it difficult for fish to breathe. High ammonia levels can also lead to suppressed immune systems, making fish more susceptible to disease. To check ammonia levels in an aquarium, you can use our liquid test kits or test strips. Liquid test kits are generally considered more accurate and involve adding specific drops of testing solutions to a water sample and comparing the color change to a provided chart. Test strips are quicker but may be less precise. Dip the strip into the water, remove, and compare it to the color chart. Always follow the instructions provided with your specific test kit. How does ammonia relate to the nitrogen cycle? The nitrogen cycle is a natural process where beneficial bacteria convert toxic ammonia into less harmful substances. First, bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite, which is also toxic. Then, another type of bacteria converts nitrite into nitrate, which is relatively less harmful. Nitrates can be removed through water changes or used as nutrients by plants. How to manage ammonia in your aquarium: Establish the nitrogen cycle: This involves introducing beneficial bacteria to your filter media, which will break down ammonia and nitrite. Proper filtration: Ensure your filter is adequately sized for your aquarium and fish load. Regular water changes: Performing partial water changes (e.g., 25-50% weekly) helps remove nitrates and other waste products, including ammonia. Avoid overfeeding: Uneaten food contributes to ammonia buildup. Monitor water parameters: Use a liquid drop test kit to regularly check ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. Maintain a healthy fish population: Avoid overcrowding your aquarium, as this can overwhelm the filtration system and lead to ammonia spikes. Address the cause of ammonia spikes: If you experience an ammonia spike, investigate the cause (e.g., overfeeding, dead fish, filter malfunction) and take corrective action. Consider using an ammonia detoxifier: In emergencies, chemical products can temporarily neutralize ammonia, but they don’t replace proper filtration and water changes.
